I just joined this site hoping for an opportunity to connect with people in the outfitting business.

I have hunted all my life and plan to continue hunting until the day I die. It has always been my dream to own a large piece of land and run an outfitting business on it. However I was not fortunate enough have any passed down to me. I'm sure there are others out there who started off the same way. I guess I am wondering if I can get some direction from other outfitters on where to start since it seems like acquiring large tracts of land nowadays seems almost impossible unless you win the lottery or happen to inherit a large fortune. Maybe I have to start out small or maybe there are government programs out there to help me get started. I'm not sure. Anyway it was worth asking so if anyone has some words of wisdom, I'd be more than happy to listen.

I just signed up with this website and read your post. We are outfitters in Pike County Illinois.

We don't own our land we lease it. It is a wise idea to lease because you can always change areas if need be. Usually contracts are only for a 3 year period. We are allowed to plant food plots, clear areas for shooting lanes, put up treestands etc. You pay the lease and insurance and are not obligated to buy a HUGE parcel and pay the tax on it as well.

We have had our business for 2 years now and are finding that we need to move back to our home state of Vermont, that is why I ended up on this site. I am planning on listing it to sell. We have a large house and an attached 7 bedroom inn that sleeps 18. We currently lease 228 acres and have hunters starting in October through January 14th. We also rent rooms out during hunting season.  We have a website; www.miltonsbigbuckinn.com. We have ads in place and brochures. The enitre inn is totally furnished with furniture and bedding, refrigerator and microwave....etc.... The inn is located in a small town but close to many large parcels that come up for lease regularly including the one we currently lease.
